What I do

Risk Management

Managing risk is a key part of HR management in any organisation.  This is why many clients ask me to review (or audit) their HR documentation - contracts and policies - as well as their systems and procedures.  I have written many Staff Handbooks and have set up different types of template contracts and offer letters.

Another important area is employee relations advice.  Once a client relationship is established, I am able to offer a telephone and/or face-to-face advice service, covering the whole range of HR/people issues.  Common areas are absence management, performance issues, conducting disciplinary and grievances meetings, fixed term contract issues, flexible working applications, redundancy and restructuring, and job evaluation.

I also provide training in all aspects of HR management which assists with risk minimisation by training line managers in how to use the HR policies and how to manage their staff.  Training courses provided include: Annual Appraisal, Performance Management, Managing Stress, Time Management, Using HR Policies; but new training can be provided, as required.

Development

As well as providing training, as outlined above, I also run team development days and one-to-one coaching.  I am trained to use Myers Briggs Type Indicator and have run a number of different types of team development days.  These help people to understand and value difference in the workplace, and can be particularly valuable in relation to improving communication, decision-making, planning and building relationships.

I also help organisations to develop through assistance with recruitment initiatives.  I have run recruitment and selection procedures from start to finish, or elements of them as required.  I have recruited trustees, directors/chief executives, and a whole range of other staff.  For small charities that do not have dedicated HR staff, or some staff/trustees have the skills and experience but not the time, this can be a useful option.

I am frequently asked to conduct salary reviews, which often involves a review of the salary structure and process as well as research and recommendations on actual salaries.
